Recipe Stats & Faces!

By now many of you will have discovered the Report tool which gives you an overview of all the activity happening on your recipes on Cookpad.

But what if you want to see information about each recipe on its own?

Now you can! We've added a panel to every recipe on Cookpad showing the basic stats of the recipe as well as the faces of people who've interacted with it.  Unlike the Report page, this mini panel is viewable by everyone.

Screen_shot_2011-09-26_at_1

For authors this is great as you can really get a sense of how appreciated your recipe is as the faces of people who've Cookmarked, printed etc your recipe show up in the panel.  For other viewers it's nice to see the behind-the-scenes story of each recipe so you can get an idea of how popular it is!

The recipe stat panels are viewable now - just check out any recipe on Cookpad! Here are some to check out:

Who is the Yummiest of Them All?

We have two great new features to announce today on http://cookpad.it

Firstly, you may have noticed that on the homepage there is a new Featured Recipe at the top of the page.

Screen_shot_2011-09-19_at_3
Every week we will be choosing one of our favorite recipes from Cookpad and giving it the honor of Featured Recipe on the homepage.  If your recipe is chosen, you get a comment from the Cookpad team, you get featured in the top slot on the homepage and you also get featured in our weekly newsletter (sent every Wednesday) - which should give you a nice little bump in your views which you can track using the My Kitchen Report tool!

Speaking of the Report tool, we've upgraded it to now include Annotations.
Screen-shot-2011-09-19-at-3
When you perform certain actions on Cookpad (for example, posting a new recipe) this will be recorded with a marker on the views graph.  This way you can better understand the rise and fall of your views - you'll be able to see which of your recipes got the biggest spikes... it might give you some inspiration of what to cook next!

To check out annotations, Sign In to Cookpad and add a recipe!  You can add a recipe via your browser if you have taken pics already with your camera, or you can use the Cookpad.it iPhone app to quickly and easily take recipe pics while you are cooking.

It's like Retweets...for Food!

We've just released a major update to Cookpad.it all centered around Cookmarks! Now, even if you don't write your own recipes, you can still join in the fun of cooking with Cookpad.it!

A Cookmark is like a bookmark - it's a way for you to mark recipes that you'd like to reference at a later point.  Click the Add to Cookmarks button on any recipe:

Screen_shot_2011-08-17_at_4

...and it will get added to your My Kitchen area for later reference.  But wait, there's more! When you get round to actually cooking recipes in your Cookmarks, you'll find there's a new option to share your creation with Cookpad.it and the original author.  Here's my Cookmark list with a recipe I saved for Banana Ice Cream:

Screen_shot_2011-08-17_at_4

It's a great recipe - I cooked it and took a picture! Now wouldn't it be nice to give credit back to the original author AND share my creation with the world? Now you can! Click the "Cooked It" button next to the Cookmark and you'll be able to upload a picture and a comment:

Modal

This then gets turned into a "Retweet"-style page that you can share with your friends and has a link back to the original author, like this:

Screen_shot_2011-08-17_at_4

What's more, your "Retweeted" recipe will appear on the homepage, on your My Kitchen and on the original recipe page in the comments:

Screen_shot_2011-08-17_at_4

Screen_shot_2011-08-17_at_4

So even if you're not writing your own recipes, you can now build up your My Kitchen and keep all your cooking photos in one place :)

Enjoy and have fun!

Cookpad International Offkai #2

We just had our 2nd international offkai here in Singapore! The international team has been working hard to deliver new features so we had a lot of new things to show users. For example... new UI / layout, new AJAX image uploads, and new activity indicator! The next wave of features will be smartphone-related, hopefully in time for the next offkai. The international users are really excited about a smartphone app...

All photos from the event are here! Enjoy!

Bay Life

It's hot in Singapore so when you go out to eat, often you'll be eating outdoors. This is a typical meal by Marina Bay - stingray, greens, satay and hokkien mee. The greens were amazing, I must learn how to cook it at home...

Cookpad International MVP & Offkai #1

For the last two weeks Miles, Jens and myself have been busy building a Minimum Viable Product of the Cookpad website to bring to international markets! We're taking a very user-driven development approach, starting off with the absolute basics and iterating from that point onwards based on user feedback and various metrics. To do this, we are holding "Offkai" cooking events which gives us the chance to connect with real users, do some cooking together and get feedback about the site in a contextually-relevant atmosphere.

Media_httpfarm3static_krjbg

You can check out the site here:

http://i.cookpad.com

Please sign up and contribute a recipe! But in English please hehe.

Media_httpfarm3static_bpzia

Media_httpfarm4static_oiffa

We've started with only basic functionality. Our priority was getting the product to market in order to begin iteration with real users. So there's no commenting, no ingredient tags, no search (there's no recipes to search yet anyway!). But I'm sure all of those features will turn up in an iteration cycle at some point.

For the offkai, I invited around 20 people to a cooking class hosted by me! The format of the event was a friendly competition. I split everyone into teams (randomly so they met new people) and their task was to create two recipes printed out from Cookpad and plate it up within 1 hour. I had prepped their work stations with ingredients so they had everything they needed. As this was happening, I walked around and gave some cooking tips on a team-by-team basis. When they had finished cooking I asked each team to name their dishes and tell me how much they would charge in a restaurant. I did a taste test of each one and picked two winning teams (they won Valrhona chocolates). Then we took photos of the food, ate it, then finally each team uploaded the recipes to Cookpad. It was a great format for an offkai I think - everyone had tons of fun, I got some great feedback, and we got a few new fans. It's a win-win for both Cookpad and the guests.

Below are some selected photos of the event. I will put all the photos and some videos over on the Cookpad Facebook Group.
